1/2 loaf of stale bread
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup olive oil
2 garlic cloves, sliced (or garlic powder)
Slice any stale bread and cut into medium size cubes. Place in a shallow dish and leave uncovered on counter until bread is dry. Store in an air tight container in freezer until ready to use.
Melt butter in large frying pan, then add oil. Place garlic in butter/oil mixture and cook until garlic begins to brown. Remove garlic, then add your favorite seasonings (we like sage and pepper). Add stale cubes of bread and stir to coat well. Stir and fry until cubes are nice and brown (if your croutons are not as crunchy as you would like, after they have browned, place them in the oven for a few minutes).
Variations: By removing the garlic cloves, these croutons will have a light hint of garlic. For a richer garlic flavor, remove all cloves after they have browned. Finely chop one, then add back to butter and oil mixture or add a little extra garlic powder.
Once you try homemade croutons, you’ll never be happy with the store bought kind. These are so flavorful and work well with any salad! This is also a great way to use up any leftover bread. Simply cut into cubes, then store in your freezer until you’re serving a salad.
