Instant Oatmeal Packets



To make 10 individual instant packets:

In a food processor, blend ½ cup of oats until powdery (this will make the powdered oats listed in the recipe below)

Combine the following into each individual ziplock sandwich bag:

¼ cup Rolled Oats
2 Tbs. Powdered Oats (directions listed above)
1/8 tsp. Salt
4 tsp. Sugar (optional)
Close the top and store in a dry place.

Microwave directions for cooking:
Empty packet into microwaveable bowl. Add 2/3 cup water or milk. Microwave 1.5 minutes; stir.

Conventional directions for cooking:
Empty packet into pan. Add ½ cup boiling water; cook and stir over heat until thickened.

Recipe taken and modified from the "Family Recipes" cookbook. I personally combine all ingredients into one large ziplock bag, then each morning measure out 1/3 cup of oatmeal for a single serving.

What are powdered oats verses unpowdered oats?

Sorry, I noticed the recipe is unclear. I just modified the recipe so it's a little easier to understand.

First you'll blend some rolled oats in a food processor to make them powdery. Then you'll add those to your oatmeal packets along with some regular rolled oats.

So, I'm just wondering the benefit of this. My husband cooks regular oats (not the instant or quick kind) in the microwave for a total of 2 1/2 min. Do you do this to save 45 sec. or is there a benefit I don't see? Maybe just texture since my parents prefer the instant pkgs????

Hi Holly, this recipe along with your husbands breakfast accomplish the same thing- avoiding the additives in the instant packets sold at the grocery store and a cost savings from the grocery store packets.

Many people who are hypersensitive to MSG react to the chemicals sprayed on the cardboard tubes and boxes the oatmeal comes. We usually have to buy oats in bulk or in the organic section to avoid the chemicals, then use a recipe like this one to make something similar to the instant packets.

Good for your husband for enjoying the whole regular oats- it's a texture thing for me- I prefer the instant. :)
